Leaving Eden

Leaving Eden

""The promise of beauty–the kind of real, personal beauty that can transform a person’s life–arrived in Eden, Virginia, on the fourth Thursday in June."" That’s the day Tallie Brock sees the sign at the Klip-N-Kurl, the beauty parlor where she works part-time, sweeping the floor and refilling shampoo bottles, among other chores. (What she really enjoys is listening to the women chat, gossip, and buzz like a beehive.) The sign in the front window announces GLAMOUR DAY. For twenty dollars, a woman can receive a complete professional makeover–and a glossy nine-by-twelve-inch picture of the result. For Tallie, the glam shot just may be her ticket out of Lovettsville. She dreams of someday going to Hollywood and becoming a Star. Her mother, who was the spitting image of Natalie Wood, used to say "the sky’s the limit." In fact, her mother once left home to make a movie in Los Angeles. But she returned six months later without whispering a word about it–and tried to pick up her life right where she left off. Tallie noticed something different, though. And her mother’s best friend, Martha Lee, the plainest woman within miles, knew the secret that soon the whole town would discover. At the time, Tallie was just afraid her mother would get antsy and disappear again. She was only half right. But that was four years ago, and now Glamour Day is fast approaching. While jotting down observations in her Rulebook for Living (such as "Women with fat faces shouldn’t wear bangs" and "Beetles signify change"), Tallie finds "herself" changing in unexpected ways–as she tests the limits of trust, explores her growing attraction to a boy from a family as rich as her imagination, and reaches for thesky like she has never done before. By turns funny and tender, joyous and poignant, bestselling author Anne LeClaire has written a winning, stylish novel of small-town Southern life– and what it means to be a mother, daughter, best friend, wife, and lover.

The Body Project: An Intimate History Of American Girls

The Body Project: An Intimate History Of American Girls

"Timely and sympathetic . . . a work of impassioned advocacy."         –PeopleA hundred years ago, women were lacing themselves into corsets and teaching their daughters to do the same. The ideal of the day, however, was inner beauty: a focus on good deeds and a pure heart. Today American women have more social choices and personal freedom than ever before. But fifty-three percent of our girls are dissatisfied with their bodies by the age of thirteen, and many begin a pattern of weight obsession and dieting as early as eight or nine. Why?In The Body Project, historian Joan Jacobs Brumberg answers this question, drawing on diary excerpts and media images from 1830 to the present. Tracing girls'' attitudes toward topics ranging from breast size and menstruation to hair, clothing, and cosmetics, she exposes the shift from the Victorian concern with inner beauty to our modern focus on outward appearance–in particular, the desire to be model-thin and sexy. Compassionate, insightful, and gracefully written, The Body Project explores the gains and losses adolescent girls have inherited since they shed the corset and the ideal of virginity for a new world of sexual freedom and consumerism–a world in which the body is their primary project."Joan Brumberg''s book offers us an insightful and entertaining history behind the destructive mantra of the ''90s–''I hate my body!''" –Katie Couric

Zone Food Blocks: The Quick and Easy, Mix-and-Match Counter for Staying in the Zone

Zone Food Blocks: The Quick and Easy, Mix-and-Match Counter for Staying in the Zone

Here’s the follow-up to The Zone and Mastering the Zone. Author Barry Sears, Ph.D., has formulated a way for readers to follow his diet plan (30 percent fat, 40 percent each carbohydrates and protein) by breaking down foods into measurable units, la Weight Watchers. It’s designed to make eating on the run–even if you’re stopping at McDonald’s–a Zone-friendly experience. But it’s not exactly a piece of cake. Anyone who hated word problems in math class may be slightly baffled by the necessary calculations for foods not listed in the charts. For example, if you want to convert a serving of cereal into Zone blocks, you need to look at the label and subtract the grams of fiber from the total grams of carbohydrate; this gives the total of insulin-promoting carbohydrate. Divide this result by 10. (Although to be accurate, it should be divided by 9, as Sears has assigned 9 grams to each carbohydrate block; he says you may as well round up to 10, since that makes the math easier.) And there you get your Zone block. As long as your total blocks stay within the 40-30-30 ratio, you’re in the Zone. Even more confusing are the measurements for some of the “pre-calculated” foods in the charts. For example, 80 fluid ounces of Rice Dream Rice milk equals 39 carbohydrate blocks and 8 fat blocks. While it’s unlikely anyone would guzzle down 10 servings at once, it is likely they’d have a hard time finding this product in the listings in the first place, as it’s listed

What If There Were No Significance Tests?

What If There Were No Significance Tests?

The classic edition of What If There Were No Significance Tests? highlights current statistical inference practices. Four areas are featured as essential for making inferences: sound judgment, meaningful research questions, relevant design, and assessing fit in multiple ways. Other options (data visualization, replication or meta-analysis), other features (mediation, moderation, multiple levels or classes), and other approaches (Bayesian analysis, simulation, data mining, qualitative inquiry) are also suggested. The Classic Edition’s new Introduction demonstrates the ongoing relevance of the topic and the charge to move away from an exclusive focus on NHST, along with new methods to help make significance testing more accessible to a wider body of researchers to improve our ability to make more accurate statistical inferences. Part 1 presents an overview of significance testing issues. The next part discusses the debate in which significance testing should be rejected or retained. The third part outlines various methods that may supplement significance testing procedures. Part 4 discusses Bayesian approaches and methods and the use of confidence intervals versus significance tests. The book concludes with philosophy of science perspectives.Rather than providing definitive prescriptions, the chapters are largely suggestive of general issues, concerns, and application guidelines. The editors allow readers to choose the best way to conduct hypothesis testing in their respective fields. For anyone doing research in the social sciences, this book is bound to become “must” reading. Ideal for use as a supplement for graduate courses in statistics or quantitative analysis taught in psychology, education, business, nursing, medicine, and the social sciences, the book also benefits independent researchers in the behavioral and social sciences and those who teach statistics.

Painting by Numbers: Komar and Melamid’s Scientific Guide to Art

Painting by Numbers: Komar and Melamid’s Scientific Guide to Art

What is beauty? Who defines it? And why is high art so remote from most people? With the same puckish humor and critical genius that made them the betes noires of Soviet cultural commissars, the Russian emigre art team of Vitaly Komar and Alexander Melamid takes on not only the billion-dollar American art industry but also capitalism’s most venerated tool: the market research poll. With the help of a professional polling firm, they discovered that what Americans want in art, regardless of class, race, or gender, is exactly what the art world disdains — a tranquil realistic blue landscape. Painting by Numbers includes the original questionnaire and reproductions of the "most wanted" and "most unwanted" paintings the artists made based on American survey results and on polls they exported to nine other countries — including Russia, China, France, and Kenya — representing more than one-third of the world’s population. Essays by JoAnn Wypijewski and noted art critic Arthur Danto, as well as interviews with the artists, explore the crisis of modernism, the cultural meaning of polls, the significance of landscape, and the commodification of just about everything.

Bernie Sanders: ‘Something Is Clearly Lacking’ In Hillary Clinton’s Judgment

Democratic presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders on Sunday questioned rival Hillary Clinton’s temperament for the highest office in the land.

In an interview on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” the Vermont senator clarified his criticism of the former secretary of state last week, in which he said she isn’t “qualified” for the White House.

“The point that I was making, which is absolutely correct, is that if you look at where she is getting the money from Wall Street, another powerful special interest, she voted for the war, she cited Henry Kissinger, in a sense, as a model for her,” Sanders said. “I think those issues will tell the American people that in many respects, she may have the experience to be president of the United States. No one can argue that. But in terms of her judgment, something is clearly lacking.”

In a separate interview that aired Sunday on CNN’s “State of the Union,” Sanders again took a swipe at Clinton and her qualifications as president.

“I have my doubts about what kind of president she would make,” he said.

The two candidates jockeying for the Democratic presidential nomination both spent the weekend campaigning in New York, which holds its primary contest on April 19. According to a Fox News poll released Sunday, Clinton leads Sanders 53 percent to 37 percent in the state.

The Senate’s Draft Encryption Bill Is ‘Ludicrous, Dangerous, Technically Illiterate’

AS APPLE BATTLED the FBI for the last two months over the agency’s demands that Apple help crack its own encryption, both the tech community and law enforcement hoped that Congress would weigh in with some sort of compromise solution. Now Congress has spoken on crypto, and privacy advocates say its “solution” is the most extreme stance on encryption yet.

9 Common Characteristics of People Destined for Greatness

Are successful people born or created?

We all carry the capacity to become successful. We’re all equipped with our own special gifts and talents. But some of us lose our path a long the way. Life can be a cruel teacher. We learn to stop dreaming and start being realistic.

People who become great break past the thinking society tries to place on them. They follow their dreams, accomplish something great, and leave their observers in a state of envy and awe.

What makes them different? Are there common traits of people destined to make a dent in the universe? Absolutely. Even if you don’t posses these traits right now they can be learned and applied.

Here are the traits of people destined for greatness.

    They’re Not Humble

In the normal sense of the word. Most people pretend to be humble on the outside. Outward humility means that you don’t come off as cocky and try to appear modest. But on the inside you’re as arrogant as can be , because you feel like you deserve a better life but aren’t willing to work for it.

People who become great are humble on the inside. They put in the work. They practice. They learn everything that needs to be learned about their craft.

    They’re Irrational

“The reasonable man adapts himself to the world. The unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore, all progress depends on the unreasonable man.” — George Bernard Shaw

People destined for greatness aren’t considered rational or realistic by society’s standards. Instead of blindly accepting what others tell them, they make the decision to form their own unique path. They’re the type of people who believe reality can be shaped in their minds.

    They Don’t Believe In Inspiration

“I only write when I am inspired. Fortunately I am inspired at 9 o’clock every morning.” — William Faulkner

People on the path to greatness realize they won’t be feeling up to do the work each and every day. There will be days where you want to sleep in, avoid doing your work, or keep yourself distracted.

Don’t fall prey to the passion myth. People seem to have this idea that finding work you love to do is supposed to be fun one hundred percent of the time. No matter how much you love what you do, there will be tasks you dislike and days when you feel uninspired.

If you’re consistent and develop the ability to follow through you’ll be miles ahead of the pack.

    They Don’t Live Balanced Lives

Your ability to prioritize time will determine how productive and effective you are. People who are on the path to greatness don’t spend their time democratically. They know how to say no to unimportant things in order to make time for their work. Yes, time with family and close friends is important, but after that comes work and nothing else.

Work-life balance is overrated. You don’t need a vacation, you need a vocation. When you find the work you’re meant to do you won’t want to take time off.

    They’re Lucky

Successful people do, in fact, get lucky sometimes. They’re lucky because they put themselves in a position to be lucky.

There are two types of luck:

    • Blind luck – An example of blind luck is winning the lottery.
    • Purposeful luck – This is the type of luck where you’re spending your time growing, learning, and connecting with people. You “luckily,” happen to meet your future mentor, business partner, or investor in your company.

Opportunity mixed with preparation creates luck. When you’re determined to become great opportunities will present themselves and you’ll be prepared to seize them.

They Know That Personality Traits Can Be Learned

Some people are naturally charismatic and confident. If you aren’t a natural at these things it doesn’t mean you can’t learn how to develop these traits. Social skills are important when it comes to being successful. You’re likely going to have to talk to actual people in person to help spread your ideas and build the network you need to succeed.

You can join your local toastmasters club to work on your speaking skills. Top professionals have been known to take acting classes to build confidence and charisma. There are coaches and courses that teach you how to build confidence and charisma.

Do you have a fixed mindset or a growth mindset? Don’t fall into the trap of believing you’re limited to the personality traits you were born with.

They Visualize Their Success To The Point Of Certainty

Basketball players are trained to visualize their free throws going in before they attempt them. Golfers have been known to play entire courses in their head over and over again before they step on to the green. Your imagination and belief in yourself carry you towards your destiny.

One of the most difficult parts of following a lofty dreams is believing you can do it. Doubt will creep in every time you imagine yourself living out your dreams. But over time (and coupled with actual work) you’ll become certain of your vision.

Your imagination and vision will keep you going during tough points on your path.

    They Ask Great Questions

Don’t say, “I can’t afford it.” Ask yourself, “How can I afford it?” Challenge yourself by asking this question instead of acquiescing and saying you can’t. You’ll be better for it. You’ll seek out and find solutions where you thought none existed before. – Robert Kiyosaki

People destined for greatness know that there is a solution to nearly any problem as long as you ask the right questions. Most people fail to think when faced with a difficult situation. They’re resigned to their circumstances. If you want to be great you need to figure out how to be great. You figure it out by asking great questions.

    They Never Fail

People on the path to greatness don’t believe in failure. They make mistakes. Things don’t always go their way. But they treat everything like an experiment. In an experiment you form an educated guess based on your research. Then you test it. If the experiment goes south it’s not a failure –your hypothesis was just wrong. The experiment likely gave you valuable feedback for the future. A good scientist continues to conduct experiments until they make a breakthrough discovery.

Think of yourself as a scientist and run experiments. This blog post is an experiment in gauging what people get value from reading it. Your life is an experiment in figuring out what makes you feel fulfilled. You’re only a failure when you stop seeking answers.

    Doulas For The Dying

When I tell people that I am an end-of-life doula, their first question is: what is that? The second question is why? The “what” is simple to answer: it is a volunteer who accompanies a person on their final journey. We are not hospice. We do not administer medication. We are there only to soothe the passage from the known world into whatever an individual believes awaits them.

The “why” is more complicated. I tell them: I do it because I can. I can “do” death. The dying process does not frighten me. It might when it is my turn to look death in the eye — but for now — I am unafraid.

When I was 41, a dear friend who I had known since grade school died of HIV/AIDS. I attended him in his final days. I was scared then. I was afraid of life without him, I was afraid of the actual cessation of his breath, I was afraid of being with a dead body. But my fear was unfounded. To the contrary, being able to be there with him during the last hours of his life was a gift from him to me. It informed me about living in a way that nothing had before.

I witnessed the miracle of life as I attended to his dying, playing the music he loved, massaging his hands and feet, bringing good, sweet smells to his bedside. I told him stories from our youth as the clock chimed his final hours. And then it was over. I sat with his sister until the wee hours of the morning, sipping red wine, reminiscing. He was a gentle soul and we basked in his spirit until the first light of dawn.

There is this bridge at the very moment of death when you see life leave the body. It’s an inexplicable suspension of time, when a day, an hour, a lifetime passes in a flash. There is air in the lungs, the blood moves, the heart pumps. And then it doesn’t. I think of this moment often when I am feeling sick or sorry for myself. I think: my heart beats, the blood flows, I am alive. Get up and get moving. Live in the world. Make the best of these numbered days of conscious being.

I was present for the death of both my in-laws. I could feel the palpable reluctance of my mother-in-law to leave. She did not wish to separate from her husband, to leave him on his own. We had to encourage him to lie down next to her in those last days, to hold her and warm her with his own body heat. Her spirit and her body struggled with each other days longer than her doctor anticipated. Surrounded by family, she finally succumbed. Two days later, the rails inside her closet collapsed, sending all her clothing to a jumbled heap on the floor. She did not go easily and she wanted us to know that. My father-in-law, on the other hand, at the age of 96, didn’t want us to fuss. With his customary aplomb and determination, he left swiftly to join his beloved. Within five minutes of death, the house he shared with his wife of 61 years was cold and deserted.

As I sat beside an elderly gentleman during my last vigil, I noticed the birds gathering along the eaves of his home. When I pointed this out to his daughter, she told me he liked to feed them and had bird feeders set up throughout the yard. As the day progressed and his death drew nearer, the birds came by the dozens and perched on the branches outside the window. It was remarkable. I believe they came to witness and say thank you to a spirit that spoke to theirs. Each death is unique. Each death has something to teach us about living.

I liken the experience of being an end-of-life doula with that of being present at the birth of a baby. When a mother is in labor everyone runs to the hospital with outstretched arms. “Can I hold her?” they ask the nurse. “My turn,” they insist. It is a natural instinct to want to welcome new life. When someone is dying, when they are leaving us for the last time, I think it is just as important to say “Can I hold her?” “It’s my turn.” To hold the hand of a dying individual is to see them out of this world in the same way we welcome a baby into it. They are both journeys of transition, ultimately experienced alone but not without company. To shepherd someone into this life or out of it is a truly rare opportunity, a remarkable experience, and in my humble opinion, an obligation.

“Do you think you’d be able to manage such a large commission?”

In early November 2012, this was the question someone asked Hadley about the Montana State Capitol Building mural project. Hadley was the only Montanan – in fact, the only Westerner – in the group of three finalists, and her work was well known; so was her Parkinson’s diagnosis, because of her organization, Summit for Parkinson’s. Now, Hadley herself was wondering if it was reasonable for her to remain in the competition.

Later that day on the phone, Hadley and I mulled this over. On the one hand, she was so tired and slow-moving that it was difficult for her to imagine physically executing the mural if she were to win the competition. On the other hand, she still didn’t have a clear diagnosis and the finalist selection was a year off; she could be fine in a year, for all anyone knew. She decided to be optimistic and stay her course. If she were to win it, the mural commission would be the most exciting project of her career.

Hadley continued work on the Missoula Catholic Schools murals, grappling with her increasingly bothersome symptoms. Since all of her movements were slow and stiff, her dexterity was worse, climbing scaffolding to work on the large panels was becoming difficult, and she had trouble getting up from a squatting position without support. All it took for her to lose her balance was someone tapping her on the shoulder from behind. She fell several times, luckily without injury. In addition, she was struggling with focus and concentration and her field of vision seemed to be narrowing.

Fortunately, Hadley’s Missoula neurologist, Dr. Reid, was still very much in her corner. Dr. Bright’s diagnosis of Parkinson’s and Dr. Youngman’s dismissal of both Parkinson’s and MSA, and his embrace of upper motor neuron disease still didn’t make sense to Dr. Reid. She felt it was time to call in the big guns – the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.

The Mayo could take Hadley in late November and scheduled her for a series of appointments during a ten-day period over Thanksgiving. Hadley wanted John to stay in Missoula during her first week at the Mayo so that Sarah and he could spend the holiday as they usually did. John would join her the second week so that he could be with her at the important appointments summarizing the Clinic’s findings. To break up the stretch of time Hadley would be alone, I decided to fly to Rochester on the Saturday after Thanksgiving to be with her for a few days.

Rochester, Minnesota, five o’clock, late November 2012. Looking forward to our movie, Hadley and I paid for our mojitos and hustled out of the bar into the slipstream of the crowded mall. The drinks hadn’t been strong, but we must have appeared a little drunk anyway, with our awkward walks. For both of us, maneuvering through crowded spaces had become trickier. To make matters worse, for diagnostic purposes, Hadley had stopped taking levodopa for the duration of her time at the Mayo. I could tell she was concentrating hard on not running into the racks of scarves and hats and people swimming toward us in their fat coats and boots.

But at least, unlike me, she knew where we were going. Many times in the past six days she’d traversed the underground arteries that branch from the mother ship Mayo; they minimize a person’s contact with Rochester’s harsh winter temperatures that average between 12 and 27 degrees. Fast food, fast souvenirs, fast art – in the mall, they’re all available for the 35,000 people who work at the Mayo and the thousands of patients who are killing time between heart-pounding visits to the medical specialists who’ll send them back to Riyadh or Rome, Marseille or Missoula with the most costly souvenir of all: a diagnosis that will change their lives.

The teeming tunnel spewed us into the lobby of the Mayo. I took a deep breath as the soaring glass curtain wall lifted the compression in my chest. The Gonda building is the newest in the 3.5 million square foot medical center and has the ambiance of a five-star hotel or corporate headquarters; a sea of beige marble, bronze statuary and medusa-like glass Chihuly sculptures make it easy to believe that it really is The Best Medical Center In The World. On Monday morning, Hadley and I would be back here at nine a.m. for her appointment with the movement disorders specialist. But now, we were just passing through to the garage, hoping to get to the movie on time.

I climbed into the driver’s seat of a rented red Chevy Impala and Hadley sat next to me, navigating with her iPhone. The Galaxy 14 Theater was 5 ½ miles south on route 63, a road lined with warehouses and malls, devoid of landmarks – unless you counted Target, which I soon learned people there do.

Hadley was subdued. Finally, she asked, “Do you want to hear what that one doctor wrote in her report about me?”

I did. Hadley scrolled through her emails on her phone. Mayo reports are sent to the patient within a couple of hours after each appointment. Hadley had told me that the first doctor she met with six days ago, a general neurologist, had given her a “probable” diagnosis of multiple system atrophy. But the next day, a physical medicine and rehabilitation specialist reported inconsistencies in Hadley’s exam that might suggest she didn’t have an organic disease at all. This was the report that was bothering Hadley.

“I felt like she was trying to trick me,” Hadley said. “Listen to this: ‘Though she has definite organic problems, she has inconsistencies on her examination. During handwriting, she wrote small, but she has excellent coordination and grasp/relax of the pen. While I was typing my notes, she was toying with the ring on her finger, moving her fingers in a normal and fairly rapid way without difficulty that seems very different than her formal exam findings. She has broad based ataxic, stiff-legged gait with decreased arm swing and very turgid trunk and pelvis. However, her gait as she left the examination room was at least 50% better than during the exam.'”

Hadley slapped her phone down on her lap. “In a half-mile, take a left turn,” the phone instructed us. “You see what I mean? It’s like she was looking to trip me up.”

“Wait,” I said. “Read it to me again. I think I know what you mean, but I need to hear it again.”

When Hadley had finished reading, I understood; the doctor clearly had been looking for contradictions in Hadley’s movements. Why? I wondered.

“That whole thing about me having a better gait when leaving the exam?” Hadley said. “Of course I did. She had me walking back and forth in this tiny room, every two steps having to turn, and turning is always hard for me. When the appointment was over, I got to walk straight out the door, which is a whole different thing.” I knew this difficulty Hadley was talking about; changing directions when walking can often feel precarious to me. “And when she was watching me twirl my ring?” Hadley went on. “That’s a small repetitive movement, a habit like a twitch almost, completely different from the bigger hand movements she’d asked me to do. Also, my decent coordination with the pen is because I’ve been working with an occupational therapist on my grip so I can keep painting.” Hadley sighed. “But she believes all this is proof that it’s all in my head. It’s like she’s saying, ‘Gotcha! It’s functional!'”

“Functional” was clearly the hot-button word for Hadley, but I wasn’t familiar with it.

“It’s a movement disorder brought on by psychological causes, not organic,” Hadley explained.

“Listen to this part – she’s so evil! ‘Alert, appropriate affect, excellent historian. Admits I am not the best patient.’ Totally out of context!” Hadley says, before reading on: “‘She was told she had Parkinson’s disease and had been pretty comfortable with that until this summer when things changed. She has moments when she is very overwhelmed. She expresses a lot of self-doubt. Depression is likely. She may need further psychological evaluation and counseling relative to the functional overlay.'”

Hadley groaned. She was flushed and furious. She suspected this doctor’s report had biased the movement disorders specialist she saw the next day who wrote in his report:

    Impression:
Gait disorder and rigidity. The patient has a very unusual exam. This is not a classic disease of anything. I agree we need to consider things like stiff person syndrome and primary lateral sclerosis. I am not comfortable with the diagnosis of multiple system atrophy. I find the signs of her parkinsonism to be unusual, and I think a functional etiology needs to be in the differential diagnosis for her problem.

It seemed MSA and PD were no longer even on the table, having been blown off by the gust of a suggestion: functional movement disorder.

I found myself thinking again about Munchausen syndrome, in which a patient invents symptoms and travels from doctor to doctor, changing her medical story. Could this “functional” word suggest something like that? I didn’t buy it. Once again, I felt indignant on Hadley’s behalf. Despite the fact that no doctor in recent years had doubted she was afflicted with an organic disease, I could see her confidence was shattered and she was in the grip of all the memories of doctors who hadn’t taken her symptoms seriously.

Hadley’s phone announced that we’d reached the Galaxy 14. We parked in the nearly empty parking lot and the insides of my nose froze as we ambled toward the theater’s entrance. Inside the huge, red-carpeted lobby there were only the ticket seller, popcorn scooper, soft drink dispenser, Hadley and me. I ordered some popcorn for us, trying to cop some much-needed feeling of fun. I began to worry whether the movie would be okay for Hadley. Although there were fourteen theaters in this one building, we’d only considered two of the movies playing, deeming the others too stupid, too violent or too sad. We’d finally nixed the Bond movie for potentially being too stimulating after Hadley’s exhausting days at the Mayo. That left “The Sessions.” “Heartwarming” the reviews said, which to me sounded prescriptive.

There were three other people in the cavernous theater. Who would come to watch a movie about a man in an iron lung on a 14-degree Monday night? I wondered. Loneliness settled over me and I knew Hadley felt it, too. She pulled out her phone and it lit up her face like an old friend.

“The Sessions” is based on the true story of Mark O’Brien, a polio victim who spent most of his life in an iron lung. In his thirties, he hired a sex therapist with whom he could lose his virginity. The film was touching, poignant, but I wasn’t watching it through my own eyes, I realized ten minutes into it; I was trying to see it through Hadley’s. Could it be entertaining to watch someone else’s cruel medical plight when you were seeking a diagnosis for your own?

Hadley leaned into me. “I’m worried that after all this, I’ll leave the Mayo without knowing anything more,” she whispered. “What do you think of what the rehab specialist wrote?”

How could I possibly have imagined with everything on her mind that Hadley would be able concentrate on a movie? In my head, I tried to rationalize the doctors’ reports, reminding myself that this was the Mayo after all, and I should keep an open mind and let the professionals do their work. Besides, I hadn’t yet had a chance to research what this “functional” diagnosis really meant. But then my intuition blared: “functional movement disorder” simply did not fit Hadley’s case.

“Forget about that doctor,” I whispered. “She just has something to prove. No one will pay attention to her report.”

When Hadley laughed and said, “Right? Oh good,” I knew I’d said the right thing.

Still, she barely touched the popcorn. Occasionally, she checked her phone. Then for a while she seemed to settle into the movie. Helen Hunt sweetly caressed her disabled client; witnessing the movie’s intimate scenes in such an empty theater, I felt more like a voyeur than part of an audience. I wondered if Hadley was wondering, as I was, whether this man’s horizontal life was better or worse than her life would be. Was his condition or hers the worst thing?

Each time the caged man laughed, it signaled a little victory for humankind – a testament to how, if only for a moment or two, we can rise above even the most challenging circumstances.

3 Things I Needed to Hear When I Weighed 300 Pounds

    2016-04-01-1459545657-5764512-beforeafterracepic.jpg

The size of my body was a daily burden to me.

Some days, it was the frustration of not being able to find clothes in my size at department stores. It was an epic excursion just to find a simple white button down blouse and black slacks to wear to work as part of the required uniform.

Other days, it was the physical exhaustion and pain of doing manual labor at my workplace and carrying around an extra 150 pounds all day (every day) while my average-sized co-workers assumed I was lazy for taking more breaks than them.

And on especially low days, it was the feeling that the only kind of man who’d ever be interested in me was a freak or total loser. Who could be attracted to and fall in love with a woman who couldn’t even see her own vagina without a handheld mirror? I accepted that any flirtation that happened with the opposite sex would never end with a real relationship.

These were just a few of many reasons I sought comfort in food and alcohol and suffered from mild depression since the age of 10. It was the judgment from others, how much harder life felt for me because of my size, and the fear that I would grow old alone.

At that time in my life, it was impossible to hear messages that claimed I just needed to love my body more, be nicer to myself, and trust the process. I was in such a low place of despair most days that it only made sense to either accept my body size as a life sentence or bully myself into trying fad diets and damn near starving myself in the process.

When I started my last weight loss journey seven years ago (weighing 300 pounds), I wish someone I trusted and respected had told me these three little-known truths that would have saved me a lot of heartache and frustration:

Everyone thinks they have it the hardest.

All of us have something that holds us back and makes life harder. For me, it felt like I was destined to be morbidly obese for the rest of my life because my entire family was. I wasn’t a genetic rock star. I also felt like I couldn’t get healthier because I was living paycheck to paycheck and couldn’t afford a gym membership or healthier foods.

Some folks have family responsibilities that take up a lot of time and energy, the stress of studying for school exams, hormonal issues with the thyroid or PCOS, or other genuine physical limitations and disabilities. We all have something that makes reaching our goals more difficult. It’s easy to forget that when you’re in the trenches of trying to improve your life.

When you’re ready to start making big changes, barriers will come up left and right. Sometimes, they will seem like the truth and sometimes they’ll just sound silly. It’s a test. You have the choice to allow those obstacles to continue to hold you back, or you will find creative solutions around them.

The best thing you can do is be truthful with the excuses you make for yourself right now, instead of thinking about what your ideal self can do. I know my ideal self would be able to workout in front of her television to a fitness DVD, prepare all of her meals fresh each day, and have a never-ending supply of energy. My real self needs to join a gym for variety and accountability. She also needs to prepare some of her meals ahead of time or rely on a few pre-made meals from the freezer section of the grocery store. She’s also going to be tired at the end of the day, so she needs to recognize that her willpower will be depleted and will need to set up a plan to avoid making poor decisions after 5 p.m.

Some days, just showing up is good enough.

Fast sells. Complicated sells. A good majority of people have an all-or-nothing mindset–that’s why quick results are favorable and complex techniques are viewed as superior to what’s simple. It’s all about the marketing. It will also leave you feeling worthless when change doesn’t happen overnight, and you can’t keep up with the complex routine you’re supposed to follow.

Despite popular belief, you don’t have to plan out every little thing about your weight loss journey. It never goes according to your plans anyway. Unexpected events will come up, and you’ll need the flexibility to handle them. It’s okay to fail and even momentarily give up. The very best thing you can do for yourself is to get back up and show up again and again. You don’t have to give 110% at what you do. You don’t have to go hard or go home. The truly successful person knows this.

Perseverance can sometimes be painful, especially if you don’t see any noticeable rewards. It really is a lifestyle change. You have to be willing to be in it for the long-haul. Some days will be amazing. Some days will suck. The more you learn to enjoy what you’re doing, the easier it is to tolerate the crappy days and the lack of visible results.

By the way, this also applies to starting a business, becoming a new mother, going back to school, etc. Keeping it simple and sticking with it is the best advice for any challenging endeavor.

    It’s OK to try.

I never wanted anyone to know I was trying. Trying to lose weight, trying to diet, or trying to exercise. To me, trying meant that I acknowledged I needed to change, and I needed help. And needing help was a sign of weakness. Just the thought of awkwardly pushing my big sweaty body through workouts in front of others made me squeamish and I dwelt on, “What will they think of me?” So, I foolishly delayed getting that gym membership for years.

When I finally took the terrifying plunge of joining a gym, I realized very quickly that no one seemed to care what I was doing. No one rolled their eyes at me. No one commented that I was sweating too much. No one said I should be lifting weights instead of walking on the treadmill. No one stared at my naked body in the locker room as I changed. No one said a damn thing. Everyone was focused on their own workouts and their own bodies.

Eventually, you’ll no longer see trying as a vulnerability. You will realize that it’s important for you to continue showing up and allowing people to see you’re trying. It helps others understand they’re not alone, and it’s okay for them to try, too.

Are you working on a weight loss journey and need to hear some words of encouragement? Leave a comment and let us know what you need to hear!

Starbucks Customer Appalled After Label Reads: ‘Diabetes Here I Come’

If it was meant to be funny, it missed the mark.

A Florida man is speaking out after he says he received an especially tart message printed on his Starbucks beverage: “Diabetes here I come.”

The man, who didn’t want to be identified, told WJAX-TV that he found those words printed on his white chocolate mocha. It hit a nerve with him because two of his sisters have Type 1 diabetes.

“That first word just automatically brought the picture of both sisters in my head, and I was taken aback,” he told the local Jacksonville TV station. “Just the struggles they went through and all the doctor appointments they had.”

He wrote back on the cup: “2 of my sisters are diabetic, so … not funny.”

The St. Augustine store’s manager appeared surprised over the label and told the local reporter that they “definitely don’t condone” such actions and would look into what happened.

The customer said he believes that he was unfairly and inappropriately judged by a Starbucks employee and wants to make sure that it doesn’t happen to him or anyone else again. He noted that he didn’t personally go into the store to place the order, but had a co-worker pick it up for him as part of a group order.

A Starbucks spokesperson confirmed to The Huffington Post that the message had been printed in the store. Some online users suggested that the label had been written by a customer who was placing the order online.

“We strive to provide an inclusive and positive experience for our customers, and were disappointed to learn of this incident,” the company said in a statement. “We’ve since connected directly with the customer to apologize for his experience, and with our partners (employees) to ensure this does not happen again.”

That Starbucks beverages contain a lot of sugar — which in some cases can cause health problems – shouldn’t be a surprise. Some of their beverages have been found to contain more sugar than a milkshake.

A “grande” white chocolate mocha, which the Florida customer ordered, has 470 calories and 59 grams of sugar, according to Starbuck’s website.

That tops the daily maximum amount recommended by the American Heart Association. For men, it’s 45 grams (nine teaspoons) or 30 grams (six teaspoons) for women.

Sugar-rich diets can contribute to a number of health conditions, including diabetes, obesity and some cancers.

But according to the American Diabetes Association, high-sugar diets aren’t the only thing that can be blamed for the disease. When it comes to Type 1 diabetes — which the Starbucks customer said his sisters have — most people inherit risk factors from their parents.

“The myth that sugar causes diabetes is commonly accepted by many people. This is a complicated issue,” the ADA states on its website. “Eating sugar has nothing to do with developing type 1 diabetes. Type 1 is caused by genetics and other unknown factors that trigger the disease.”

However, the ADA warns that sugary drinks have been linked to developing Type 2 diabetes. As a prevention, they advise limiting sugar-sweetened beverages.

For those already living with Type 2, the association advises saving sweets and desserts for special occasions and keeping portions small when indulging.

But it’s not just the total sugar content people should watch out for.

“If you don’t have a lot of time when reading labels, simply look at the total carbohydrate in a food,” the association suggests. “The total carbohydrate includes starch, fiber, sugar and sugar alcohols. It is more helpful to check the total carbohydrate because it includes both sugar and starch. If you only look at the sugar content, you are not accounting for the starch in a food.”

Why You Should Spend Your Money on Experiences, Not Things

This article originally appeared on Entrepreneur.com

    2016-03-12-1457749359-8607275-WhyYouShouldSpendYourMoneyonExperiencesNotThingsHP.jpg

When you work hard every single day and there’s only so much money left after your regular expenses, you have to make certain it’s well spent. Spend your limited funds on what science says will make you happy.

    The Paradox of Possessions

A 20-year study conducted by Dr. Thomas Gilovich, a psychology professor at Cornell University, reached a powerful and straightforward conclusion: don’t spend your money on things. The trouble with things is that the happiness they provide fades quickly. There are three critical reasons for this:

    • We get used to new possessions. What once seemed novel and exciting quickly becomes the norm.
    • We keep raising the bar. New purchases lead to new expectations. As soon as we get used to a new possession, we look for an even better one.
    • The Joneses are always lurking nearby. Possessions, by their nature, foster comparisons. We buy a new car and are thrilled with it until a friend buys a better one–and there’s always someone with a better one.

“One of the enemies of happiness is adaptation,” Gilovich said. “We buy things to make us happy, and we succeed. But only for a while. New things are exciting to us at first, but then we adapt to them.”

The paradox of possessions is that we assume that the happiness we get from buying something will last as long as the thing itself. It seems intuitive that investing in something we can see, hear, and touch on a permanent basis delivers the best value. But it’s wrong.

    The Power of Experiences

Gilovich has found that experiences–as fleeting as they may be–deliver more-lasting happiness than things. Here’s why:

Experiences become a part of our identity. We are not our possessions, but we arethe accumulation of everything we’ve seen, the things we’ve done, and the places we’ve been. Buying an Apple Watch isn’t going to change who you are; taking a break from work to hike the Appalachian Trail from start to finish most certainly will.

“Our experiences are a bigger part of ourselves than our material goods,” said Gilovich. “You can really like your material stuff. You can even think that part of your identity is connected to those things, but nonetheless they remain separate from you. In contrast, your experiences really are part of you. We are the sum total of our experiences.”

Comparisons matter little. We don’t compare experiences in the same way that we compare things. It’s hard to quantify the relative value of any two experiences, which makes them that much more enjoyable.

Anticipation matters. Gilovich also found that anticipation of an experience causes excitement and enjoyment, while anticipation of obtaining a possession causes impatience. Experiences are enjoyable from the very first moments of planning, all the way through to the memories you cherish forever.

Experiences are fleeting (which is a good thing). Have you ever bought something that wasn’t nearly as cool as you thought it would be? Once you buy it, it’s right there in your face, reminding you of your disappointment. And even if a purchase does meet your expectations, buyer’s remorse can set in: “Sure, it’s cool, but it probably wasn’t worth the money.” We don’t do that with experiences. The very fact that they last for only a short time is part of what makes us value them so much, and that value tends to increase as time passes.

    Bringing It All Together

The temporary happiness achieved by buying things can be attributed to “puddles of pleasure.” In other words, that kind of happiness evaporates quickly and leaves us wanting more. Things may last longer than experiences, but the memories that linger are what matter most.

What makes you happier, experiences or things? Please share your thoughts in the comments section below as I learn just as much from you as you do from me.

4 Questions to Reshape Your Life

We go at it day after day. The routine is tiresome, at best, At worst, it is exhausting, even debilitating. In our daily haze, we become numb to life: we stop feeling the world the way we should. Our emotional intimacy with the people and experiences around us dulls down and with it, our joy. We become less aware, less conscious of our intentions, thoughts, and actions. Inevitably, it happens to us all. Frustration and impatience take the place of mindfulness, and this is the point at which we have to stop, remind ourselves of our purpose, and re-strategize.

If you’re seeking to reshape your life, reflect on the answers to these four questions to increase your awareness, expand your mindset, and change your outlook:

What thoughts do you keep thinking? Ever notice that the more you think about something, the harder it becomes to get your mind off of it? That’s because the neurons in your brain form clusters around your thoughts. You’ll continue to think the thoughts you’re used to thinking because there’s increasing traffic on those neural pathways. Like every other part of your being, your brain acts on habit and becomes programmed to operate in a certain way. And like a broken record, the thoughts usually repeat the same form and produce the same results. This can be detrimental to your wellbeing if you’re embedded in thoughts of fear, hatred, vindictiveness, or despair. When you think about something, do you think about it with any of these emotions? Are you constantly worried that something will go wrong? If fear is the first element that’s sparked in your brain, you will act on that fear and hesitate, unable to make sound, firm decisions. Desperation will lead you to make the wrong decisions entirely. It’s imperative that you sort through your thoughts and take control over what you keep thinking. Contrary to what many believe, you can change your thoughts! You can shift their course as they’re forming simply by paying attention: when you catch that recurring, destructive thought popping up again, force it out of your mind. Visualize a different circumstance or scenario, one that’s more in your favor. In time, the neurons will link around the more positive thoughts you’ve taught yourself. Remind yourself: The things that I’m afraid of haven’t happened and they don’t need to happen.

To whom are you listening? Are you obeying the voices of other people, or are you heeding the voice of your intuition? If your relationship with yourself is strong enough, you won’t have to rely on the often misleading opinions of others. You’ll think twice before you follow what everyone else is saying and doing. Your best guidance will radiate from within. Realize who and what is influencing your decisions. Also ask yourself if some of the things you’re doing are for others or for yourself. Do they meet your ultimate good, or are you settling and sacrificing time after time? Finding your authentic self is nothing short of miraculous: it is a birth of your own truth. When in doubt, introspect: Are my choices satisfactory to me or to someone else? What do I honestly want to do?

What is your first reaction? What is your first reaction to an unpleasant situation? Do you immediately want to run away or immediately want to resolve the problem? Your initial reaction indicates your dominating emotion: anger, anxiety, irritation, etc. Ultimately, you want your primary response to be understanding, acceptance, and faith. Understand the greater reason, no matter how bad the situation seems. Accept the outcome as a catalyst for your personal growth. Have faith that regardless of what has happened, you will come out of it better than before. This allows you to skip the negative, confusing, and stultifying emotions and reach a resolution to whatever problem may be at hand. Take nothing personally if someone’s done something bad to you. Remember that people are dealing with their own issues that you know nothing about. Acknowledge that throughout life you’ll feel disappointed just as often as you’ll feel pleased. There is nothing that can’t be resolved through this simple sort of logic.

How do you regard others? What is your attitude towards others as you weave through the world from day to day? Do you feel a general sense of disappointment in humanity, or do you still believe in the goodness of others? Do you avoid making eye contact whenever possible or strike up a conversation with a stranger? The way you regard others speaks volumes about what’s brewing inside of you. If you’ve shut yourself in, it’s time to gently open up again. The problem is that it only takes one person to ruin your trust in everyone else. People will continue to draw out of the same old habits you’ve worked very hard to erase. They will try to open wounds you’ve diligently healed. But that shouldn’t halt your progress: you must evolve for your own sake, not for anyone else’s. If you’ve lost your sense of confidence in others, understand that there are still many kind-hearted, likeminded folks out there just like you. Cynicism will only lead more untrustworthy people to you. But the more that you continue being a good, genuine person, the more you will be able to forgive those who have wronged you and find the right sort of company.

The only two things you need to reshape your life are desire and awareness. Let the answers to these four questions be your motivation towards greater mindfulness, strength, and joy.

Ladies rule the gym this month — with females out front on all but three of the month’s top tunes. The list also favors the poppier end of the musical spectrum. At the same time–even with these elements in common — there’s still room for a few surprises.

The most anticipated songs of the month are the new singles from Sia and Meghan Trainor. Collaborations also proved popular — with Zara Larsson and Fifth Harmony teaming up with MNEK and Ty Dolla $ ign, respectively. Lastly, from the fellows, you’ll find the latest from Pitbull, a remix from Coldplay, and a fast track from St. Lucia.

In short, what seems like a homogeneous playlist on the surface turns out to be a remarkably fluid mix of dance, pop, rap, and rock on further inspection. Moreover, it’s spring–when pop’s jauntiness returns after months of hibernation. So, it’s a great time of year for buoyant beats and an even better time to get outdoors. Here’s the full list — according to the votes logged on workout music site Run Hundred.

    • Pitbull – Freedom – 118 BPM
    • Zara Larsson & MNEK – Never Forget You – 73 BPM
    • Coldplay – Adventure of a Lifetime (Matoma Remix) – 112 BPM
    • Years & Years & Tove Lo – Desire – 126 BPM
    • Sia – Cheap Thrills – 90 BPM
    • Meghan Trainor – NO – 94 BPM
    • St. Lucia – Help Me Run Away – 158 BPM
    • JoJo – When Love Hurts (Hugel Remix) – 120 BPM
    • Fifth Harmony & Ty Dolla $ ign – Work from Home – 105 BPM
    • Tori Kelly – Something Beautiful – 93 BPM

The book concludes with philosophy of science perspectives. Rather than providing definitive prescriptions, the chapters are largely suggestive of general issues, concerns, and application guidelines.

How to Live a Life With Purpose

    2016-04-08-1460145389-4485619-yemayahammock.jpg

If you want to live a life with purpose, a life that feels right, you must spend time being quiet, being still – listening to yourself, trusting yourself, being honest with yourself, so that you may discover the gifts you were born with. As the Platonic doctrine of recollection asserts we do not come here to learn, but rather to remember the comprehensive knowledge we came bundled with at birth. Living a life that feels right is contingent on our discovery of that knowledge. And the giving away of those gifts is how you live a life with purpose.

Personally, I wasn’t taught that I carry in me ancient wisdom to be discovered and used for the good of all. My education suggested I look outside myself for what I was seeking. And when we look outside of ourselves most of us are looking with just our eyes. Some of us ignore completely how it feels. In this sense, many have begun to misplace value – we think if it looks good, based on some ridiculous preconceived notion, then it must be good. We look at it and compare it to what someone else thinks about it, or consider it’s monetary value, which has foolishly deemed it somehow superior or inferior. So rather than uncovering what is within us, we begin to mimic, and in the process of mimicking, forget who we are.

If you want to live a life with purpose you must stop mimicking and you must stop seeking outside yourself, so that you can begin to wake up to what lies dormant within. Those who haven’t yet heard the voice that speaks when all is still and quiet often wake up feeling a little lost (or a lot lost!), like there’s something missing from their life. This is why meditation is becoming a billion-dollar-a-year industry. But do not be fooled – you do not need to purchase something to access what is being offered. In order to discover in yourself what you came bundled with at birth, you must learn to still the body and mind, and you must self-initiate. No one is going to pull you aside and let you know you’ve been specially chosen for this life. You have arrived! Do not wait for someone else to choose you – choose yourself. Rather than making decisions based on how it looks, make decisions based on how it feels. If it feels right, then it is right. If it doesn’t feel right, then it’s not. Apply that to every aspect of life – the relationship, the job, the city, the food – and if it doesn’t feel right, find within you the courage to do something about it.

While on your path of self-discovery remember, above all, to be gracious and kind to yourself. You will make mistakes. You will be tested, so that your values can become increasingly clear. When your values become clear, your desires and your dreams, they too become clear. They become markers on your map of destiny. They are indications of what you have every right to achieve. If you can dream it, you have within you the tools to achieve it. You simply need to learn to harvest what you carry within. Be discerning on your journey. Very often who we think we are keeps us from recognizing who we really are. And don’t take yourself too seriously. Remember to enjoy it. That too is your birthright. This life is meant to be enjoyed… it’s meant to be pleasurable. Allow it to be. Slow down, remember to breathe, get still, be quiet, so that you can understand your experience with your whole being, rather than with only your eyes or only your intellect, and one day you will wake up and find yourself living a life with purpose.

“Your vision will become clear only when you can look into your own heart. Who looks outside, dreams; who looks inside, awakes.” — Carl Jung

New Lyme Disease Study Reveals Strong Reporting Bias

On March 31, the New England Journal of Medicine published a study that concludes, “In patients with persistent symptoms attributed to Lyme disease, longer-term antibiotic treatment did not have additional beneficial effects on health-related quality of life beyond those with shorter-term treatment.” This study is a useful contribution to ongoing investigations of how to treat ongoing Lyme disease symptoms among patients who have received the standard 28-day course of doxycycline and continue to experience severe symptoms commonly associated with Lyme disease.

This study is also significant because, unlike the majority of Lyme disease-related studies published in peer-reviewed medical journals, it made international headlines in mainstream news outlets. Some publications that specialize in medical and health-related stories covered the story appropriately, such as Medscape, whose headline reads, “Post-Treatment Lyme Disease: Longer Antibiotics May Not Help.” Others, perhaps most notably Forbes, created their own exaggerated version of the findings. Forbes contributor Steven Salzberg announced on April 4 that “Long-Term Antibiotic Use for Lyme Disease Doesn’t Work, Study Finds.” The headline is similar to the Medscape one, but the designation between “may not help” and “does not work” is extraordinarily important. That’s just the beginning of Forbes’s irresponsible reporting of the story.

It is obvious to anyone familiar with either journalistic ethics in general or Lyme disease specifically that Salzberg’s story contains factual errors, gross misrepresentation of findings, and a lack of context that is vital to understanding the results of the study. A few points of primary importance:

    • In the originally-published story, Salzberg reported that approximately 30,000 new cases of Lyme disease occur within the United States each year. A reader quickly corrected this grossly incorrect number, citing the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) revised 2013 estimate of upwards of 300,000 annual cases of Lyme. This is a matter of basic, rudimentary research. Salzberg replied, “I’m not sure where the commenter gets her number of 300K, but that’s not correct.” He later admitted his mistake and updated the text of his story — but did not indicate within the story that he had initially reported erroneous information or that he updated the story. This is a straightforward case of reporting misinformation and not acknowledging in the body of the story that it has been updated — poor reporting.
    • While the newly-published study underwent rigorous peer review, its findings are obviously limited to the study’s scope of investigation. The study investigated the efficacy of two antibiotics, doxycycline and clarithromycin-hydroxychloroquine, against lingering Lyme disease symptoms. While the findings show no significant improvements among the test subjects, this by no means can be construed to mean that “long-term antibiotic use for Lyme disease does not work.” The study investigated only two of scores of available antibiotics, administered only over a limited “long-term” course of three months, and did not attempt pulsed antibiotic techniques or investigate or discuss Lyme disease coinfections, which may complicate treatment. The results of the study are valuable contributions to the literature, but they do not rule out the efficacy of other classes of antibiotics administered alone or in combination, the treatment is limited to three months when it is possible that longer treatment techniques may be necessary for those who have late-stage Lyme disease, and other treatment techniques need to be explored in a laboratory setting. Salzberg’s interpretation of the study is wildly exaggerated and, simply put, incorrect.
    • The story is problematic in a great number of other ways, which are described and discussed thoroughly by readers in the comments section following Salzberg’s story. My word count is limited here, and so readers should consider the well-researched and well-reasoned counterarguments put forth by readers.
    • I contacted Forbes Health Editor Matthew Herper as well as the general corrections@forbes.com email address with these and many other specific concerns and asked that the publication publish a better-informed and more journalistically balanced article. To date, I have received no response.

This article and others like it are greatly concerning. Salzberg, both in the body of his article and in the comments section, asserts that he presumes to know better than both Lyme disease patients and the physicians who treat them about the pathology, presentation, diagnosis, and treatment of Lyme disease — even when it is obvious through his writing that he is lacking even the basest level of knowledge about the disease. For reasons not disclosed, he has chosen one side of a complex political debate, and Forbes has given him a platform through which to attempt to influence readers with a poorly researched and even more poorly reasoned opinion piece. He presents the term Lyme literate — often used to designate physicians who treat Lyme patients — in a disparaging way, when his story is inarguably Lyme illiterate.

This morning, the Bay Area Lyme Foundation announced that findings of a new study it funded, conducted by Stanford University researchers, reveal that certain strains of Lyme disease bacteria found in California may survive antibiotic treatment.

“Many Lyme disease patients experience symptoms after treatment, and this study appears to help us understand why this may happen,” said Bonnie Crater, Vice President and Science Committee Chair, Bay Area Lyme Foundation. “This study demonstrates the potential for effective treatment for patients with Lyme disease for whom routine antibiotics are not working.”

    The foundation further notes:

Although some studies have shown doxycycline can completely eradicate the bacteria that causes Lyme both in vitro and in vivo, conflicting studies have shown that doxycycline cannot eliminate all of the bacteria. In fact, previous laboratory research which studied a strain of B. burgdorferi persisters commonly acquired from ticks on the East Coast, identified additional drug candidates that can more effectively eliminate those persister strains than the current antibiotic regimen used for acute Lyme disease.

Both studies — the one published in the New England Journal of Medicine and the Bay Area Lyme Foundation-supported, Stanford-conducted study to be published in the peer-reviewed open-access medical journal Drug Design, Development and Therapy, are contributions to ongoing investigation into the highly complex and largely mysterious pathology of Lyme and associated tick-borne diseases. None of these studies is conclusive or definitive, and responsible and appropriate discussions of findings describe them in the context of the body of literature and, dare I say, in consideration of both patient and physician experiences, which should not be altogether dismissed, and especially by arrogant assumptions made by individuals who have little understanding of even the most fundamental and widely accepted aspects of Lyme disease.

Forbes should qualify Salzberg’s article as the opinion of its author, and should lend context to that opinion by disclosing Salzberg’s personal and professional qualifications that enable him to position himself as an authoritative and definitive voice among the thousands of scientists who continue to investigate the disease. If it cannot justify Salzberg’s definitive claims, then it should at the very least publish better-informed, more objective opinions by better-qualified authors.

As well, all media outlets should reconsider the recent trend of publishing misleading and sometimes patently false headlines and stories based on the findings of singular studies. Medical research is cumulative, and few if any studies are ever so well designed, long-term and thorough that they, on their own without the context of the greater body of literature, can be interpreted as the final word on any complex medical condition and its treatment. To do this is grossly irresponsible, and can influence the public to make poor decisions about their health and the health of their children. Based on the sheer numbers, Lyme disease is an epidemic and no one — and especially not Salzberg, whose misreporting is obvious and inarguable — has enough research today to make a judgment call as broad and definitive as the one Salzberg has claimed.

7 Signs You Are an Authentic Leader

You have most likely heard the word authentic used in conjunction with leadership. Is authentic leadership just a buzz phrase, or is it something you should actually care about as you continue to develop yourself as a leader? It is definitely something you should care about, and here’s why: Authentic leadership is genuine leadership.

Business growth is more likely to come about with authentic leadership because it is transparent and promotes a growth mindset instead of a fixed mindset, while authenticity instills a work culture of personal growth, accountability, and innovation.

Here are seven characteristics that all authentic leaders share:

    1. You know who you are and what you stand for

This is the most important authentic leadership trait because you cannot possess the other six characteristics if you do not first know who you are and what you are all about. You, in turn, are not afraid to be yourself, show yourself, and let your values be known to others.

    2. You transparently interact with others

People know where they stand with you because you are open and honest in your interactions. You don’t say and do things just to please others or maintain the status quo just to avoid rocking the boat.

    3. You follow your gut
Since you know who you are and what you stand for, you are in tune with your gut. You listen to what your gut tells you and you do it. But at the same time, you check your gut by listening and absorbing the feedback and opinions of others before you make important decisions.

    4. You adhere to a code of ethics
Authenticity denotes that you are inherently ethical in your business and personal dealings. Some professions, such as law and medicine, have their own codes of ethics that you as a professional have to follow. If your profession does not have an established code of ethics, you should adopt your own and exercise it in everything you do.

5.Your life’s work is bigger than you
While your life’s purpose and work are driven by your own personal interests and passion, you are driven by something bigger than you, whether you want to make your employees’ lives better, to create something to benefit your immediate
community, or your product is truly designed to make the world a better place.

    6. Humility

You have the humility to admit when you are wrong or have made a mistake. You can truly ask for forgiveness when it’s necessary and take steps to make it right again. You don’t overuse the word sorry, but instead reserve an apology for the most appropriate circumstances.

    7. You embody the 3 C’s: Compassion, Curiosity, and Courage
The 3 C’s are: Compassion, Curiosity, and Courage. Since you possess the six other characteristics mentioned above, you embody the 3 C’s.

Compassion: You are not only compassionate to others, you also engage in self-compassion. This is an especially important practice when you are faced with your shortcomings as a leader. You are kind to yourself in these moments.

Curiosity: You engage with yourself and those you lead from a place of curiosity. When you disagree with a colleague, you are curious about his or her point of view, instead of judgmental. You are curious as a means to understand, not judge.

Courage: Self-compassion and curiosity are what allow you to be a courageous leader. When you exhibit your courage and fail, self-compassion is what picks you up and allows you to be courageous again.

Authentic leaders may not exhibit all of these characteristics at the same time because authentic leadership involves developing more tolerance for vulnerability, which is difficult. As Dr. Brené Brown says, “Vulnerability is the birthplace of courage.” Authentic leadership is courageous leadership because you have to make yourself vulnerable by showing others who you truly are, which also opens you up for criticism.

Authentic leadership and transparent work culture are one and the same: You cannot have one without the other. A leader does not suddenly become authentic, just as a work culture doesn’t one day become transparent. Authentic leadership is a constant journey and commitment, both to your own growth and to the growth of something bigger than yourself.

    The Anger of White People

    So, white people are angry.

The Great Recession hit many white people right in the gut. All of a sudden, their whiteness didn’t help them; the economic downturn had no more mercy on them than it did on poor black and brown people.

White supremacy failed them. It has never helped the masses of white people, but as long as there was a middle class, there was the illusion of life being better for whites than blacks. No matter what, white people could say, “at least I’m not black,” a pronouncement they uttered when they escaped arrest for things they knew black people had not only been arrested but thrown into prison for. As long as there was a middle class, they were safe; they could take care of their families and do some of the things they wanted as they reached for the ever-elusive American Dream. They didn’t have to worry about the fact that many black people, as qualified as were they, were passed over for jobs and could not take care of their families. They didn’t have to worry about not even getting a chance to get in the door of equal employment opportunity. They had “theirs,” largely because they were white. They didn’t have to care about what was going on with black and brown people, and they certainly did not have to tap into the anger and despair that black and brown people have felt and dealt with for generations.

But then came that Great Recession. The Empire – comprised primarily of very wealthy, white men, worked to do all it could to increase its wealth for the lowest price possible. Manufacturing jobs began to be outsourced, and people who had worked for years in well-paying factory jobs found themselves out of luck and out of work.

    And nobody cared.

The Republicans and the Democrats had them snookered, believing that it was Entitlements and welfare and all those things which drained the economy were responsible for their pain. Members of the Empire Elite had them believing in the superiority of their whiteness. If blacks were in jail, they needed to be; after all, the War on Drugs had proven that black people were just, well, bad …and deserved all they got. White people didn’t have to deal with the despair that comes with poverty, or with the dehumanization men feel – no matter their color – when they cannot provide for their families. They didn’t have to worry about the effects of mass incarceration, which destroyed individuals, families and communities and made it virtually impossible for newly released convicts to find work once they were free.

Nope. They didn’t have to worry. They had “theirs,” and if black, brown and poor people didn’t’ have theirs, well, it was their fault. This was America. Everybody was free. Everybody had the same opportunities.

But that Great Recession came and knocked all the glass fairy tales to the ground, shattering hope, shattering dreams, shattering the well-being of a community which had been as abused and used by white supremacy as had black people. White supremacy is not the champion of all white people; white supremacy is class-based, where wealthy white people take care of other wealthy white people. These wealthy white people didn’t think about the masses of ordinary white people who would be devastated by their economic policies and practices. The masses of what the media calls “uneducated white people,” blue-collar white folks with no college to their credit were not important to the Empire Elite. White folks lost their jobs, and with that, they lost a sense of themselves, their worth, their identity and their claim to supremacy. White supremacy was supposed to guarantee some things for them. It didn’t and it hadn’t. They felt betrayed by the Republicans, who talked about big government and the waste of tax dollars by the poor.

Now, they were in the ranks of the poor, too.

It is hardly surprising, even if it is disturbing, that there is dismay about the rising rate of opiate addiction in the white community. Drugs is what many people turn to when they are poor and have no prospect of getting a decent job. So many white people are now feeling the sting of second-class citizenship, and they cannot cope. Hopelessness leads to despair and despair leads to all sorts of other things, including drug use and death.

Enter Donald Trump. One of the wealthiest men in the world hears these disaffected white people who feel ignored and marginalized It is a human need to be heard and affirmed; it is why many people, white, black, Hispanic- join gangs. Trump comes on board and is manipulating the emotions of these angry white people …and it is just that – a cruel manipulation of their emotions and of their situations, much of which Trump helped create. He has these people believing that he will lift them out of the economic doldrums. He will “make America great again,” meaning he will give them the artificial representations of their white superiority.

They believe him because they must; otherwise, the despair will consume them.

It is hard to live a life of “quiet desperation,” as Henry David Thoreau said most of us live. It is even harder when you thought you were above feeling that kind of desperation because of your race. Trump is presenting himself as the Great White Hope, but in the end, he cannot change the tide of what has happened. The world is compilcit in this economic quagmire which has decimated the lives of so many people — including white Americans who thought it would never happen to them. Trump is, in fact, saying what they are saying in their living rooms and bars; he is saying he will fix everything.

He forgets that he is only a white man with money. He is not God.

It would be good if this spate of time where the anger of white people is being lifted up could serve as the bridge for new communication and understanding between the races. But it won’t – because those who could begin the dialogues will not do that. They are holding onto the Myth of White Superiority.

And so the anger of white people will grow…and they will increasingly feel what black people have felt and lived with …for decades.

Engage Your Muse: Bring the Soul to Fruition

Creative expression is essential for bringing the soul to fruition.

What is important is that we allow our hearts and souls to give voice to what is bubbling up from deep inside. It is not about whether we receive recognition for our expression — like whether anyone reads the book we’ve written or buys the painting we’ve painted; rather it is the simple fact that we as humans or spirits in bodies make space for the arising of what wants to be creatively expressed. It is imperative that we do not try to contain the creative force of the universe.

It is in the expression of this creativity that the soul finds its’ nourishment — that the Muse finds form for the swirling energy that is waiting to be born as Her song, Her music, Her story, Her artwork or Her dance.

We thrive as humans when we find ways to express the inner light that lives within us and then we are able to more directly experience our own wholeness.

There are a myriad of ways that we can share what is alive in us and the question is: What is yours? What is it that feeds you amidst the ruggedness that is required to maintain a healthy balanced life complete with relationships, work and self-care where we find ourselves busy feeding the kids, walking the dog, doing the laundry or running our businesses while juggling how to skillfully tend to our aging parents as we compassionately make soup for friends recovering from illness or we drive a loved one to a doctor’s appointment and then somehow miraculously we find a moment to sit down, take a deep breath and relax with a good book or perhaps (dare I say it…) do nothing.

What is it that feeds your soul while you juggle life in the matrix replete with all manner of responsibilities? Are you finding time to write those children’s books that lie in wait, time to put together that online course you’ve been wanting to teach, moments to create photo books from those thousands of pictures you’ve taken over the years and are you finally making time to sing in the choir or play music in a band?

If not now, when? Life is fleeting.

Here are some questions to ponder:

Are you tending to what is most essential for you? When you arrive at your final destination what will you have discovered? What are you holding in the forefront of your mind as you walk alongside those you hold dear? What is your present time experience of the so-called “long walk home?”

When you turn to look back over the seasons of your life what will you find?

Will you feel the richness of the human relationships you’ve nurtured and what of the relationship with God, Great Spirit or your own deepest heart? Will your harvest of the sacred moments you’ve lived be bountiful as your life passes before your eyes?

What is your life about and are you living in alignment with your soul’s purpose? If so, keep it up! Continue listening, living, loving and expressing what is alive in you. Trust what is unfolding. Tend to the garden of your life.

If not, perhaps now is a good moment to begin? What do you have to lose? Maybe now is the moment to turn toward the unknown — to step into uncharted territory and risk living the life you came here to live. Perhaps now is the time to let go of old habits, of those clothes in the back of your closet that smell a bit musty having remained unworn for years or maybe it’s time for you to change jobs?

Regardless of whether you make changes on the outside you can change what is happening on the inside. This is an invitation to encounter the moment freshly without any preconceived notions of what it “should” be like. Beware the “shoulds” as they often indicate judgement and actually inhibit you from living. Pause when the “shoulds” appear and see what is true.

Here is a practice to support you in this.

Encounter This Moment: A practice for discovering what is true

Notice when the phrase “I should” arises in your mind and feel how your body responds.

Pause and take a full breath. (Pausing helps you slow down and breath creates space.)

Wait a moment and see what is true. (By doing this you are interrupting a habit pattern.)

Once again notice the sensations that are happening in your body — the body doesn’t lie.

Trust your response. (You may have the same response and yet by taking time to pause you can come from being at choice.)

Take a deep breath and acknowledge yourself for slowing down and opening to an authentic encounter with the moment. (Each time you acknowledge yourself in a positive way you make a deposit in your self-care account. Fill it up. Self-love is true nourishment and increases both the quality and length of your life.)

Do this practice regularly and you’ll see amazing results. Your life will change. We’d love to hear about your experience with this practice so please feel free to email: padma@padmagordon.com.

If you would like to learn more about Padma’s offerings in the world or schedule an individual session with her please visit: www.padmagordon.com. We look forward to hearing from you.

    Calming Your Tax Filing Anxieties

Death and taxes are two of the few certainties in life — and also two of the most worrisome. I’ve known people to literally become physically sick at the mere thought of preparing taxes. They describe having to pay taxes in much the same way people talk about their fear of going to the dentist or even flying. As a result of this fear, they do what so many others do: they avoid it for as long as possible.

They look at ways not to gather their tax forms, not to make an appointment with their accountant, and not to do that which is required of them by law. However, with most fears, the anticipation is often worse than the actual act. Taxes are no exception.

Here are 8 ways how to kick the fear because tax season is here:

    1. Educate yourself. Many people fear what they don’t know and don’t understand. Taxes can be confusing and complex. Talk to experts, make an appointment with an accountant, or read a user-friendly book. This will help you to understand what you’re doing and will provide a sense of control.

    2. Hire an expert. Just as you’d likely hire a contractor if you needed work to be done on your house, consider hiring an expert to prepare your taxes. In the face of complicated tax laws and regulations this will provide confidence that they are being done properly

    3. Know where your money is going. Contrary to what you may think, not all the money is wasted or goes to programs that have nothing to do with you. Consider for just a moment how roads are maintained and fire and police personnel are paid: your taxes.

    4. Be organized. By maintaining careful financial records throughout the year and being aware of what’s coming in and what’s going out you’ll help to keep anxiety to a minimum. Rather than taking your first look at these records just before tax filing look at them quarterly and know where you stand. This will lessen the emotional burden post-filing.

    5. Reframe your thoughts. Rather than thinking “I hate paying taxes”, think: “It’s the law and keeps our infrastructure in place and society running smoothly. I’ll do my part”.

    6. Don’t delay. Doing so only prolongs the inevitable and increases the anxiety. Take care of business now.

    7. Be transparent. It goes without saying, be transparent and present your earnings and financial information without any deception or holding back. If you’re filing jointly it’s also important not to keep financial information such as investments that may have been lost over the past year from your partner. Doing so will only create tension in your relationship.

    8. Be honest. If you file and later discover that you missed something then you can amend the return. Not disclosing an error will only create more anxiety and problems down the road so best to fess up and deal with it now.

No one likes to be told what to do, especially when it comes to their hard-earned money, and this is exactly what Uncle Sam tells us. But like death, paying taxes is a part of life for many of us. It’s not pretty and can highlight our money woes. However, these eight ways can help you overcome feelings of powerlessness, face your fears, and get those taxes filed.

Toyota Is Giving Away Cheap Uber Rides To College Students

When you’re tired, getting behind the wheel can be nearly as dangerous as driving drunk. And yet every day, Americans with drooping eyelids and heavy limbs hit the roadways — sometimes with deadly consequences.

To shine a spotlight on the dangers of drowsy driving, Toyota, Uber and The Huffington Post are teaming up to provide discounted Uber rides to college students across the country in April.

Starting Friday, HuffPost’s co-founder and editor-in-chief, Arianna Huffington, will be touring college campuses to educate students on the importance of sleep and promote her newest book, The Sleep Revolution. At each college Huffington visits, students will be eligible for a $ 15 discount on one Uber ride to or from campus, courtesy of Toyota. The discount will be valid for five days from the date of the book tour stop.

Students will receive an email or push notification from their Uber app with a promo code and a message from Toyota that reads, in part, “Nice work studying late. Now Toyota would like to help you get home safely.”

“Like a growing number of doctors, psychologists and business people, we’ve come to understand that sleep is a critical part of personal health, happiness, success and when it comes to driving, safety,” Huffington and Travis Kalanick, CEO and co-founder of Uber, said in a joint press release.

For its part, “Toyota is committed to helping everyone be safe behind the wheel,” a company spokesman said.

Everyone gets tired, and far too often drivers are putting themselves and others at risk by getting behind the wheel without the sleep they need.
Mark Rosekind, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration

College students have earned a reputation for brushing off sleep — to socialize or to study — and for wearing their sleeplessness as a badge of honor. Indeed, a full 70 percent of them aren’t getting enough sleep, according to a study published in the journal Nature and Science of Sleep.

In the long run, sleep deprivation can seriously impair the brain and body. In the near term, sleep loss affects the brain in much the same way alcohol does, research has found. Staying awake for 19 hours can have the same effect as knocking back a couple of drinks, and pulling an all-nighter is equivalent to having a blood alcohol level of 0.1 percent, which is legally intoxicated.

It should come as little surprise, then, that car crashes related to drowsy driving result in 8,000 deaths every year — almost as many deaths as are caused by drunk driving. And yet, despite the dangers, over 60 percent of American adults say they’ve driven while drowsy within the past year.

Those sleepy drivers pose a threat to everyone on the roads, said to Mark Rosekind, administrator of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

“Not everyone drinks and drives or texts while driving. But everyone gets tired, and far too often drivers are putting themselves and others at risk by getting behind the wheel without the sleep they need,” Rosekind said in a speech in Chicago in 2015.

Toyota, Uber and HuffPost hope that by taking advantage of discounted Uber rides, college students will wake up to the dangers of drowsy driving and the importance of a good night’s sleep.
